    “Atoms for LLDCs”: Advancing the Implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action through Nuclear Science

    On 14 September 2026, on the margins of the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the IAEA organized a side event entitled “Atoms for LLDCs: From Commitments to Action – Nuclear Science for the Implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action.” About this reports MFA of Turkmenistan.

    The event brought together high-level representatives and experts from international organizations to discuss the role of nuclear science and technologies in strengthening healthcare systems and promoting the sustainable development of landlocked developing countries (LLDCs).

    Speaking at the event, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications Najat Mokhtar, and Deputy Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan Azat Ovezov highlighted the importance of further developing infrastructure, introducing modern technologies and training qualified specialists in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

    Participants also discussed radiotherapy and nuclear medicine, medical physics, cancer care planning and human resource development. Particular attention was paid to the role of the IAEA Technical Cooperation Programme, PACT and the “Rays of Hope” initiative.

    The event highlighted the importance of strengthening international partnerships, sustainable investment and capacity-building in advancing the implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action and expanding LLDCs’ access to the benefits of the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

    The 70th session of the IAEA General Conference will continue its work in Vienna until 18 September 2026.
