UN Unanimously Adopts Resolution on Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan

    24 Mar 25

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously approved the resolution "Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan." This historic decision took place on March 21, 2025, during the 61st plenary session of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly while members discussed the agenda item "Peacebuilding and Peacekeeping."

Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN, Aksoltan Atayeva, emphasized in her speech before the international community the fundamental role of the neutral status in the country's foreign policy, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The diplomat explained that Turkmenistan's commitment to neutrality allows the country to consistently implement its peacekeeping doctrine on the global stage.

She highlighted that since the UN General Assembly recognized the country's neutral status through a resolution on December 12, 1995, Turkmenistan has effectively used this approach as a key mechanism for preventive diplomacy at both regional and global levels.

The adopted resolution includes a recommendation for using the territories of neutral states to conduct peace negotiations.

At the initiative of the Turkmen side, the UN General Assembly declared December 12 as International Neutrality Day in 2017. The UN system also features a Group of Friends of Neutrality, and this year marks events held as part of the International Year of Peace and Trust.
